CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Alice walked into the bar feeling surprisingly good. Despite the circumstances, she was actually pleased to be spending more time with Kat. Helping her had given Alice a sense of purpose, that she hadn’t realised she needed.

She felt a little thrill in her stomach as she saw Patrick dressed in smart jeans, spotless white trainers, and a fitted shirt

‘Looking very dapper,’ she said, sidling up beside him.

He turned and smiled, looking her up and down. ‘And you are looking beautiful as always.’

‘Why, thank you,’ Alice replied with a shy smile.

He ordered their drinks, and they found a quiet booth next to a window overlooking the high street.

‘So, to what do I owe the pleasure of your company?’ Patrick asked. ‘It’s usually easier to get a date with the Queen.’

‘The Queen’s dead,’ Alice replied, deadpan.

Patrick raised his eyebrows, a smirk on his lips. ‘My point stands.’

She knew he was teasing her, but she still felt bad about not returning his calls and texts. He probably was a little annoyed with how she’d treated him since their first kiss. How could he not be?

‘Hoping it was a booty call?’ she asked, throwing him a cheeky grin and trying not to blush as she said it. Flirting was not her forte.

He laughed and shook his head. ‘You don’t strike me as the booty call type.’

‘No,’ she replied with a sigh. ‘I don’t think I’d even know how.’

‘It’s really not that complicated.’

Alice tried to suppress her laugh but failed. ‘Maybe one day I’ll give it a shot.’

‘So, what’s going on with you?’ he asked. ‘It’s so hard to get hold of you.’

‘I’ve had a lot on,’ she replied, fiddling with the edge of her sleeve, an awkward flutter of guilt settling in her chest. ‘It’s been pretty crazy.’

‘How’s the boxing going? Did your friend win her fight last night?’

‘It’s quite a story,’ Alice replied, her shoulders sagging. ‘But the short version is that she didn’t fight, and she’s now living with me for a while.’

Patrick sat back in his chair, curiosity flickering in his eyes. ‘It sounds like quite the story.’

Alice shifted in her seat, giving a small flick of her hand as if to brush it all aside. ‘On the upside, I’m training for a fight.’

He leant forward, arms resting on the table, a big grin creeping across his face. ‘Are you serious?’

‘Yep. Pete’s arranged my comeback for a few weeks time.’

‘Alice, that’s amazing news. I’m so happy for you.’

Alice fought back a smile, but there was no stopping it. Telling someone outside of the gym made it feel more real. ‘Another reason I’m strapped for time lately, I’m afraid.’

‘Can I come and watch the fight?’

She caught herself frowning. No one had ever asked to see her fight before. Her mother attended her first couple of matches but stopped after Alice’s first loss. ‘You want to see me fight?’

Patrick took a sip of his drink and looked back at her, his eyes searching. ‘Of course,’ he said, speaking slowly. ‘I’d love to be there to support you.
